For my second roll of film, I chose color. I'm also using a Nikon 35 mm film camera, that was gifted to me. My Great Uncle Ray gave me his entire collection, it's gorgeous!

Carter and I went out on a winter walk in Doon Village so I could do some experimenting. What I love best about film is the color and tone right out of camera.

This comparison shows my SOOC {straight out of camera, digital}, my digitally edited image, and the film image. I only re-sized the film image, no other editing was done.

I'm still learning to use the focus correctly on the Nikon. I adore shooting wide open, so really calls me out on my focus. Something to work on. Occasionally though, it looks pretty that way. :)

making strides

So, I mentioned in the prior post about making advancements in the work/life balance area. Huge changes are underway with my photography business to make that possible.

First, a new work-flow system cuts my editing time by more than half. I am in love!

Second, I made the monumental decision to specialize. Everything I read said to do it, but I couldn't think of what I wanted to give up. Ultimately, however, wedding photography inspires me the most.

The artistry involved makes me swoon. I adore capturing everything from boutonnieres to the kisses. This decision makes me so happy...and a little nervous.

Here’s to being better at work and having quality + quantity time with my family.

This year I set some business goals, 4 broad goals with specific steps of action within those objectives.

Book clients in target demographic
Find a better work/life balance {lots of advancement in this area!}
Save more money earned while still investing into equipment
Learn to Shoot Film {working on this!}

Entrepreneurial enterprises that are successful have a key similarity. Uniqueness. My quest last year was honing my artistic style and branding accordingly. I don't want to attract "a lot" of clients. I want to attract the right ones. People who are thrilled with the service and products they receive. I want to find "my match".

A sub-goal of doing this was to get published by Style Me Pretty. They are, by far, my favorite wedding blog. I swoon over their features and the photographers they highlight. If a bride is reading Style Me Pretty, she will likely enjoy my style of work.

It's tricky though, you have to have the right wedding coupled with your photography for success. Obviously, the purpose of these blogs is to help other brides in designing their weddings. So, you need a killer design for the wedding.

I knew one of my brides perfectly fit that description. I was a new wedding photographer though...scary new. So, the idea of submitting that wedding gave me all kinds of butterflies. Fist part of working towards a goal is accepting the idea of failure. It's okay to try and fail. It's happened many times before and will continue.

So, you can imagine my excitement when Style Me Pretty Canada accepted my submission. Like I said, it takes a bride with a killer design along with a fabulous team of artists. Giddy with excitement and humbled by the honor.

One thing both Carter and Larissa share is their love for music. If you were to be a fly on our wall, you would often see us {and yes, I mean the whole family} break out into our rhythmically challenged dance moves. Yes, we are that cool.

Normally, they aren't allowed to play on the "big piano", but today we were getting a little stir crazy. So, we enjoyed a special duet. They played so nicely...well, until Larissa started playing on "Carter's side".

Notice, in the pictures, Larissa sporting two necklaces. Even when at her worst health, she insists on wearing jewelry. Definitely our little princess.

We are finally getting over this bout of Pink Eye/Cold. Fevers are subsiding and attitudes starting to improve. Almost there, I can see the finish line. For this round anyways.

We are still under quarantine here at the Eby home. Carter came down with Pink Eye as well. I can't say that's a huge surprise, contrary to our best efforts.

He seems to be handling it much better than Larissa did. He appears more inconvenienced by it than anything. He plays with this cars and jumps around amidst the coughing and fever. We found that giving him Tylenol just made him play harder. Crazy kid.

Just this week, I purchased a macro extension tube set to help with detail shots {newborns, rings, etc.}. I am loving it! Macro work is quite finicky. Excited to hone a new skill.

Carter's eyes aren't nearly as bad as Larissa's were. I also had permission from the doctor to give him the same antibiotic drops. So, we started treating him earlier as well.

zombie eyes

We were invited by pink eye this week. I self-quarantined the three of us, canceling on four different people. My poor Larissa's bubbly blue eyes transformed into "zombie eyes" this week. The doctor says it's a really bad case of Pink Eye. Apparently, she isn't contagious now, but she's been really fighting this thing, vomiting, fever, congestion. Not fun.

In happier news, Carter is quite the little helper these days. He cleans up his messes and even started helping around the house. Of course, he's ecstatic, I mean, what 2-year-old doesn't want a spray bottle and a towel? {Disclaimer: it's just water} I give it a few months of excitement anyways. We'll see how long it takes for the burn out to set in. In the meantime, this momma is enjoying every moment of "help".

I didn't have the heart to photograph her at her worst, big puffy, swollen, oozing eyes. So, just asked my friend, Photoshop, to help me out for a little fun.

This morning my little ones are full of imagination.

Carter is decked out his pajamas with whatever he could find. All wardrobe items are assisting him on his adventures.

Today's mission is rescuing the Firebird from the evil ogre {loooves Little Einsteins adventures}. He also enjoys chasing away scary snakes and lions. My own little hero.

I adore winding country roads showcasing snowy fields. There is something divine about a foggy, snow-laced farms.

I actually made Ben stop the other day so I could capture a glimpse of this wintry beauty.

I'm looking forward to a few maternity and newborn sessions that are coming up. It seems like my work goes in distinct seasons. Winter is maternity and newborn, spring is a mix, summer is weddings, and autumn is family and children. I love the diversity.

I'm thrilled that I have "my style" with processing. Not only have I finally discovered the tones that make me giddy, I also have a faster workflow. This makes me so blissfully content.

...aaannd we're back. Back to our everyday schedule. You know, the one that doesn't involve candy canes.

Winter is always a bummer for me. Just speakin' truth here.

I feel like curling up in a little ball and hibernating under the covers. My motivation level plummets.

Winter is a time when I have to be intentional. Intentional about exercise, diet, activities. I have to kick myself in the bum and make those mundane chores and responsibilities happen.

Carter isn't a fan of the snow either. Yesterday we were going from the mall entrance to our car, with blinding snow stinging our eyes. Carter says to Ben, "I don't like it!" Which is his famous phrase for all unpleasantries in his life.

It's okay, all the more challenge to make something fun out of that white stuff.

It's inevitable. The needles fall from the tree, the songs sound like broken records, and you long for a salad.

Signs of closure, the end of the Christmas season. We start fresh. We make promises. We hope for a better year.

Today, however, I reflect on the journey, grateful for my little family.

Today, I am so blessed. Blessed for the church we attended this morning, blessed with the giggles of my little ones, blessed with a refreshing nap, blessed with the kisses of my love.

If 2012 gives me a fraction of the happiness I enjoyed in 2011...it will be a beautiful year.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

There is something so special about being a mom for the first time. Most definitely deserving of a party.

Ben's brother and his wife are only in town for a short time before heading home to Saskatchewan {that's above North Dakota for the Americans}. So, we squeezed in a party between Christmas and New Year's. We had a big crowd, in open house style.

The theme was a rustic winter wonderland or "Baby, It's Cold Outside". I wanted to incorporate Christmas decor without that being the emphasis of the evening. Jonathan and Annette love camping in the snow, so that was part of the inspiration.

Pinterest proved incredibly valuable during the planning process. I also am so grateful to Mom Eby, Sharla, and Aunt Darlene for all of their help in making this possible.

Jonathan and Annette, we love you and pray many special blessings on your little one.

Have I mentioned that I'm grateful for my parents? Because, if I haven't, let me just take a moment to say a big thank you to mom and dad.

Children are blissfully ignorant of the efforts involved in creating happiness over this season. Whether it's choosing the right gift, scheduling naps/bedtimes for optimal energy, or enforcing sugar patrol to avoid overdose...it is exhausting.

Parenting at Christmas is work. A lot of hard work.

On the flip side, the work is rewarding. Oh so rewarding.

Rewarding seeing the excitement, the dancing feet, and the sticky chocolate fingers. Worth it, hearing their songs, squeals of joy, and perplexing questions. The return on your investment is exponential.

We're still in the midst of our holiday celebrations. We have quite the family gatherings with Ben's large family. We'll see how the kids fare the rest of our holiday marathon.

For now, I have a quiet moment. Children playing nicely with their new toys. I reminisce. I write of the small joys. The little moments that are the brick and mortar of their childhood Christmas memories.

We found this little wooden table for $5 at a thrift store. Ben painted it and I bought the red chairs at an antique market. Best gift choice of the season! They love it. Whether it's having a little snack, coloring, or putting puzzles together, it's a hit!

It does make me a little sad that I can't send my family card to as many people as I'd wish. So, I'm hoping this will be a small way of sending digital love to those who mean so much to me.

the film project: falling in love

I have a new love. It's complicated, really.

I am in love with film.

There are hurdles to this love interest. Complications of price and inexperience. That's why we're going to have a "getting to know you" time this winter to see where this relationship will lead.

I doubt film and I will ever be monogamous. Digital will always play a big role in my photography. It is instant and secure. I do see film entering my shoots...just trying to figure out what that will look like.

My first attempt - ever - at slr photography was last summer. I was really scared to develop the film. The camera I used was old and the settings so unfamiliar.

The results actually surprised me...in a good kind of way. I still have a lot of growth. However, I adore the artsy and organic feel of these images.

It is love. I'm just not sure where it will lead.

P.S. the first crush I had on film was through the inspired work of Jose Villa. Since then, we've met through various artists {such as the talented Jessica Lorren }...I am smitten.

forgetful

Last night, I completely forgot. I failed to remember that Ben and I were going out together. To a restaurant. Like a legit night out.

You'd think, I'd be waiting by the door donning stilettos for this kind of outing. Instead, Ben came home to a wife covered in flour and the kitchen a disaster.

Let's just say I can do some crazy cleaning when it comes to getting a night out. Just say the word...or is that just remember the word?

I am in the midst of planning a baby shower for my sister-in-law. I'm really excited about the decorations and the challenge of a winter baby shower. It's pretty safe to post my Pinterest inspiration board as they are rarely online. I'm especially excited about featuring a popcorn bar, trail-mix station, and hot chocolate bar.

first snowflakes

Remember the first time you made a snowflake? The magic of turning a piece of paper into an intricate design of wintry wonder? Okay, maybe I was a little more obsessed with snowflakes than the average person. I had never seen one.

My first encounter with snow was miraculous.

It was during a visit to my grandparents house. The entire week I was glued to the weather channel. Would they predict snow today? Tomorrow? "Please God, may I have this one thing? May I have a white Christmas?"

It was looking bleak. No snow in the forecast. I felt desolate, resigning my dream of a white Christmas.

Christmas Eve came. Sparkling frost covered each blade of grass. I dragged my parents outside so they could see. It was average to them, "just frost". To me, it was a promise.

The next morning, my little prayer was answered.

White dust covered the ground. I had never seen anything so beautiful. The dust grew to small white blankets. Just enough for building a small snowman. Of course, a snowball fight or two as well.

I didn't last long in my ill-equipped clothing. The snowball in my rain-boot melted into a freezing, sloshing puddle. I shivered. I've never been good with the cold.

Every winter, when curling under a blanket by the heater, I watch the snowflakes fall. I ponder the lingering memory of God's answer to a silly little prayer. Then I know, the one who knows the number of hairs on my head, cares about everything. Even little dreams.

for the first time...again

When I first started falling for Ben, it was a snowy November weekend. We spent the weekend having snowball fights, cruising to Christmas music, and watching late-night movies. Of course, this was with a group of seven other people.

Christmas came alive with the suggestion of romance. The lights twinkled brighter and snow glistened whiter. It was Christmas for the first time, experienced in a brand new way.

This year, it took me by surprise, a third "first time". The stories are more exciting, the presents more anticipated, and the treats more delicious. I'm a little child again, seeing excitement glistening in the eyes of my children.

This is why I tromp through icy paths to see tacky-lit cartoon characters. It's also why I brave sledding in freezing temperatures when asked, "Mommy come?" Christmas is alive in a brand new way.

Nothing could have prepared me for the sweet joy. I'm cherishing every giggle, every wide-eyed stare, and every curious question.

discovering friendship

We had this ideal. This dream, if you will. If we had two children close in age then they would be best of friends. This was Ben's reality with his older sister. So, of course, it would be ours too.

Well, it's been quite the opposite most days here. Until...about a week and a half ago. It's like they woke up one morning and decided that being friends is easier than fighting. No warning, just sudden friendship.

I'm pretty sure there was some secret meeting where they signed a truce.

Since then, they play, dance, help each other, and cause each other to belly laugh, all the time. I'm still in shock. I find them coming up with games and playing together.

This was one such time...peekaboo's a lot more fun with two than one.

I've been trying to include my little ones with household responsibilities lately. They still think it's fun to "help mommy". While it takes longer, it's definitely worth the effort. Here they are "helping" me make some chocolate covered pretzels to gift.

Christmas Moments

It's weeks like this one where the moments are missed.

Those quiet eyes, sparkling in wonder. They don't miss a thing. While I, on the other hand, run around checking off the to-do list. Getting frustrated when Fed/Ex sends me a long bill of unexpected brokerage fees.

Tonight, in between feeding, bathing, and running out the door to do Christmas shopping, we took a moment. A small moment.

We moved the couch, turned off all the lights, and I watched Christmas for the first time, all over again. I was no longer a frazzled mom who was just heating leftovers for dinner. In that fragile moment, I was a child again, reliving the magic of it all.

Advent Traditions

Choosing a new family tradition is one of the perks that comes with parenting. You know, those traditions that will eventually cause eye rolling and grumbling. That's okay, we all know that it's a rite of passage.

Ben's parents gave us an Advent book that has become a huge deal to the kids. I've never seen Carter so excited to experience anything. I say "experience" because each page has a "door" that you open.

Each day of the advent calendar {leading up to Christmas} we open a door and read more of the Christmas story. They take turns opening a door and asking/answering questions about the story.

Not sure why they go so nuts over this. Maybe it's because they don't know there are chocolate calendars? Shhh, don't tell them.

The lighting is horrible, but I'm in love with watching Ben sharing a new tradition with our squirmy little ones.

Eye Accessorize

I was the girl envious of my best friend's pink, speckled glasses. I even helped her pick them out.

She was at a loss to understand my jealousy.

Stories of being, "four eyes" at school didn't deter my optimism. I was pretty sure it was worth the name-calling for some dazzling specs.

While having perfect eyesight growing up, that gift diminished into my twenties.

Is it bad that I was excited?

Choosing my first pair of glasses was thrilling. I chose a navy mesh look with thin rims, unlike the chunky black ones that I thought would look oh-so-fab on me.

Well, that was five years ago. I knew it was time to return to the optometrist, I could tell my eyesight had declined.

Again, is it awful that I felt giddy about choosing a new pair? Maybe it's because they are for occasional use?

I'm not sure what brand of crazy I am, but that's okay. That's me, just turnin' a medical need into an excuse for a new accessory.

The poor salesperson, he must have shown me fifty pairs, all lovely. I wasn't in love. That's right, I wanted to feel the romance, hear the music. As soon as I put these on, I knew they were "the ones". I was smitten with the delicate lace sides. Who knew? Glasses like lace.

Okay, before you think I'm completely off the deep end {what's that...too late?}, the new ~~accessory~~ medically helpful eye-ware...

The Mom Thing

So, I have to say "Mom things" don't come that naturally to me. I have to really be intentional about crafts, games, play-dates, and those fun kid things. Something I'm working on.

That's why I love my friend Sharla. {who is also Ben's cousin}. She's one of "those moms". You know, the kind that makes this mothering thing look easy. I'm not saying she has it easy or isn't honest...she's just a natural.

So, her throwing a Christmas Cookie Decorating party, is classic Sharla. Which is great, because that means I can just show up and enjoy her efforts. Yeah, having her as a friend is pretty awesome.

The party was for our discussion group from the Beth Moore Bible Study I've attended over the autumn. I've really enjoyed getting to know these ladies.

Peppermint Popcorn

I am loving {and I mean looooving} Pinterest these days. It's like, you have a problem? nbd. Just use Pinterest.

We're doing some Christmas baking these days. I want the kids to take some goodies to places like our dentist office. Lots of fun, although I think Larissa ate more than helped this morning.

So, if you know anything about us, you know that popcorn is our family staple. Some families feel like milk, eggs, and butter are survival ingredients. Not here. We're fine, as long as there is popcorn to be popped in our stir crazy.

Ben & Debra Trivia Moment
Q: Did or did not popcorn play an integral role in Ben's and Debra's budding romance?
A: Why yes, yes it did. A fellow communications major and I were sure that popcorn helped us study harder. So, I would call Ben and offer a trade, some Starbucks ground coffee for a big bowl of popcorn that I could share with my friend.

So, really, I owe a lot to popcorn.

I found this recipe on Pinterest. I'm re-typing it just for a better blog layout here.

Okay, so disclaimer, the chocolate is very finicky. I thought it was ruined, but when it cools off, I broke off the pieces of chocolate clumped popcorn and then it made for a great salty/sweet mix.

Ingredients

1 Large Bowl of Popcorn {we make our own, but un-buttered microwave popcorn works as well}
1 6 oz box candy canes, crushed {crushed in blender}
1 package of Almond Bark {used white chocolate instead}
1 tsp peppermint extract or a few drops of peppermint oil

Directions

Place popcorn in a very large bowl - the biggest one you have.
Pour crushed candy canes on top of the popcorn.
Melt almond bark according to instructions on the package.
Add the peppermint extract or oil to the almond bark and pour over popcorn.
Stir until all the popcorn is coated.
Pour popcorn on wax paper and allow to harden.
Once the popcorn has hardened, break into pieces and enjoy!

Comings and Goings

Life is pretty crazy right now. With Christmas upon us...and, for some reason, it feels like we scheduled every possible appointment in December. What were we thinking?

I've been busily working on editing for my last wedding of 2011. I'd love to get it all finished in time for Christmas, but we'll see. I also don't want to miss out on things either. It was a beautiful location and the bride and groom were amazing to work with. You can see the post, just click here.

Our month has also included fun things like decorating and Christmas baking. We attended Bethany's outdoor Christmas pageant on Saturday night with two of Ben's cousins and their children. If you didn't catch that...it's Carter and Larissa's second cousins.

All bundled up...it wasn't nearly as cold as it could have been...but still pretty darn cold. We had to quickly take this picture as animals and throngs of people crowded together. A bit tricky.

While I type this, the kids have been playing together for one hour...incident free {okay, minor edit, I just had to "kiss an owie toe"}. I've seen big progress on their cooperation level. They are both learning how to play together...and that it's actually fun.

Dental Success

Carter had his first dental cleaning recently. I say first cleaning because he did try going last spring for his first visit. That didn't turn out so well. He was very scared, wouldn't sit still, wouldn't open his mouth. Yeah, pretty much a disaster. So, I was very skeptical regarding noted improvements. Out of nervousness, I tried preparing him ahead of time. I had him lay down, I counted his teeth and he was great. Surely it was just for me though.

Sure enough, he was a little charmer, the perfect little patient. He followed instructions, laid down patiently. I was in shock. I will also say, however, much credit goes to our amazing hygienist. She really knew what to say and how to interact with him.

Learning to use my Blackberry phone more often...though I kind of die a little inside when I do.

Celebratory Style

Ringing in a new decade certainly had it's charms this weekend. Not that I'm thrilled to be entering the 30's realm...but the celebratory part softened the blow.

Ben took off Thursday for Thanksgiving and Friday for my birthday this week for me. I know, best guy ever!

I experienced the perfect mix with family, Ben, time with friends. All that I love best.

Ben made brunch for me Friday morning while the kids "helped". Mmm, he can make a mean waffle!

Sharla surprised me with one of her gorgeous custom cakes. Chocolate with Oreo filling. Yeah...let's just say I'll be working this off at the gym over the next few weeks.

She also dropped off this vanilla latte piece of goodness along with the cake.

The birthday card Ben designed for me with the kids responses to his question. {confession: I've trained Carter to give the answer that he did...I know, I'm terrible}

Back to our weekend...

Ben's parents gave us the gift of some baby-sitting. So, so grateful!

We were able to sleep in Saturday morning. That's right, I said it. Be jealous. {wink}

I've had this wish to cruise the mall, Starbucks in hand, with my amazing man. So, that's what we did. Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference.

Saturday night we went out for a steak dinner and then a movie with some friends. I know, out on a Saturday night...we can still rock it. {okay, not mentioning how lame we are being completely exhausted by 12 am}

However...not all of us were happy. I'm posting this just to prove she's not the little angel she always appears to me {cough: mom and dad}. My little drama queen in time out.

Gut Feelings

I had my first mother "gut experience" this past week. You know, that knot you get in your stomach out of protection of your little ones? It wasn't blatant, the kind of thing nobody else noticed, yet I felt sick knowing what could have been.

Approaching someone - when you know they will think you're crazy - isn't for sissies. Ultimately, I have to do what I feel is safe for my children. I would rather deal with eyes rolling and being an inconvenience than irreparable damage to my children's lives.

Little Girl
I love that my little girl plays dress up. She adores jewelry, so be careful, she might just take your bracelet right off and claim it as her own. Of course, that's something we're working on.

Ben has to use a cowboy hat at an upcoming work event {I know, those accounting business support managers can get curazy}. The kids are loving it and take turns wearing it around the house.

As soon as I started editing these pictures, they reminded me of one of my favorite childhood books, Where Did the Baby Go? I still remember my mom reading it to me, anticipating when the little girl would finally know that she was the baby. Took me back!

Pajama Kind of Day

I used to hate Mondays. It represented a return to the daily grind with the memory of weekend excitement fading into the distance. They were the worst.

While I certainly don't love Mondays, I've learned an appreciation for them.

Hear me out. My Monday morning, the kids are ready for schedules. They tend to be happiest Monday morning. Everything is back in balance in their little worlds.

Happy Children = Happy Momma

On the Topic of Pajamas and Friendship
This morning, we all felt kind of sluggish, so we had a pajama morning. I love those.

Carter and Larissa are regular Capulet and Montagues these days. The fighting is out of control.

It starts because Carter knows what gets Larissa aggravated. Common sources of irritation include chasing Larissa with a blanket over his head making monster noises and getting in her face. She retaliates with hitting, hair pulling, even biting. He cries, falling apart from his wounds. It's a vicious cycle.

This is close to my heart as such a big part of my job. I am to ensure they learn to cooperate and work through these differences. Sibling rivalry offers some of the greatest opportunity for character development.

I know, I heard it. I'm so turning 30 this week.

Carter loves practicing his letters. His fine motor skills are still very much developing, but it's fun watching him try.

I kept trying to get Carter to look into the camera and so I said, "show me your eyes" and then got the picture on the left.

Carter is always running, jumping, and singing all over the house. His newest game is called, "monster" where he chases after us with his "scary tickle hands".

Then, there's the princess. This morning she kept laying down, crossing her legs, and modeled for me.

All Is Calm

The house is quiet. The sound of the dishwasher is slightly drowned by the sound of Maralyn Monroe cruning Santa Baby.

{That's right. Don't judge. I'm one of those people this year. Hey, when the snow starts flying, I'm allowed to listen to Christmas music.}

Ben's at a hockey game tonight, so I get to actually have some productive work hours here. Hmm, should probably start that.

Instead, I'm browsing Pinterest. In awe of Lauren Bush's wedding gown designed for her by her Father-In-Law, Ralph Lauren. Can you imagine marrying Ralph Lauren's son? Like, how in the world would you dress for the family Christmas dinner?

I digress.

I've been working at the work-life balance these days. Last week I had to start turning inquiries away so that I can ensure proper balance. It feels good. I like knowing I'm doing the right thing and feeling like the work before me is achievable. Still so busy, but realistic.

Carter, lately, practices his parenting skills on his toys. For instance, he has one tractor that is continually "mean" and has time outs quite often. His other toy keeps going "poopy in diaper" and he lectures him on going in the potty. Too bad Carter doesn't actually apply that principle himself.

You really learn a lot about your parenting skills through such role plays. Some good...some not-so-good.

Bananas

As Carter sits in his chair stuffing banana sticks in his mouth I hear him mumbling something. He's spelling. As I listen closer he's saying, "b-a-n-a-n-a". My distracted mind stops dead in it's tracks. I whirl around.

Surely. It couldn't be. My child is a genius!

Before my mind can dwell on any of these swirling thoughts, I notice my Banana Republic shopping bag sitting right in front of him. Just then he says, "It spells, Carter!".

Genius he is not. Cute...you betcha.

Carter is very obsessed with opposites these days and daily asks for a quizzing. Loves learning so much and I know I need to do a better job tapping into this interest. For now, we have our fun quizzes over a big boy potty chair {since we left the little one at Ben's parents house last weekend}. We have lots of potty time distractions, mainly of the singing variety.

In other news, I did a headshot swap with a local photographer friend, Lisa {of Lisa Kwan Images}. She is as talented as she is kind. I'm so grateful for a kindred spirit in this industry.

The Big 3-0

...not for me. Sheesh. You think I'm that old?

Okay...okay...to be fair, I may only be a few weeks away from that {yikes} age range.

On Tuesday the kids and I joined in a work surprise party for Ben. Cathy and the department did an amazing job on all the details. They even made him push a walker around the entire floor. The kids thought it was great!

Afterwards, Ben took us to lunch at this amazing restaurant on a lake. We kept the kids entertained with rounds of "I Spy" as their sugar-induced attention span waned shorter and shorter.

Ben and I will celebrate our birthdays together, later this month with a great date weekend. So, we've kept the week pretty low key.

The great thing about these pictures is that I didn't have to take them! {thanks Cathy!} I just enjoyed the party.

I love my man, he's such an inspiration to me in every kind of way.

Our Corner of the World

2.5 weeks.

It's been 2.5 weeks since I've photographed my babies. That's an eternity in my world.

Today, I finally felt the motivation to shoot for myself again {after hours upon hours of shooting and editing}. We've been on an especially high and low roller coaster since my return from Florida.

This week, alone, we had a huge grocery store meltdown, which initiated some more consistent training.

Wednesday a 12 hour stomach virus hit me. It incapacitated me while Ben worked from home, holding down the fort.

Yes, life has been exciting. An update is quite needed, I think...

Larissa Update

Talking much more these days, finally repeating words when asked. It still sounds more like vague syllables, but we're working on it.
Loves animal sounds.
Hits as her first defense mechanism, biting is her "plan b". We're working on positive problem solving.
Sings around the house.
Has to do everything brother does. Example: has to sit on the stool while Carter is on the potty, and pretends to pee {doesn't understand why she can't have an M&M too}
Is very loving, but also very stubborn
Loves books, coloring, tickles, shoes, her toes painted, and pretty clothes
Loves Pancakes and Stella sock monkeys

Carter Update

Loves games: I Spy, Hide and Seek, Crash {the game where you dance to music until it stops and then you crash on the floor}
Obsessed with learning, current kick is "opposites", but still passionate about letters, numbers, and colors
Potty Training: we have good and bad days...it's a work in progress, but he's getting there
Gives mommy the best morning cuddles ever
Loves: chocolate, parties, popcorn, Lightning McQueen, dancing, jumping, roaring, tickling, Pancakes the monkey and the breakfast food.

My Update
It's been really exciting seeing God work lately. As I learn to put the right priorities first in my walk with Him, my family, and my business...amazing things happen.

For instance, I just booked a December wedding at a dreamy venue. This allows me to purchase my 85 mm 1.2 L series lens.

Trust me when I tell you, L series lens equipment is no joke. The quality is out of this world with a price tag to match.

I really want my work to reach it's full potential through the quality that the L series line offers. It will be a slow process building my higher-end equipment collection, but I'll learn all I can each step of the way.

Family Portraits 2011

So, I debated whether or not to show these before Christmas Cards were sent out. But...I just can't wait. Plus, with my lack of posting images, this should tide {ahem} certain family members over until I can get back to photo-journaling my life.

First, a big thank you to Kerry from 11 Eleven Photography for doing such an amazing job capturing my family. She truly captured the emotions I love so much about my family. We did a photographer-trade for family portraits. One of the perks of the job!

Second, I think our family {ahem - Larissa} had to be the hardest family to photograph as a group. She would not stop running and squirming...forget the smiling. Kerry did a beautiful job with the tricky family that we are. I know, you'd think I'd have us trained better.

This is the first time we've had professional pictures taken since our wedding. Experiencing custom photography made me realize what a special gift it is. I love how relaxed lifestyle photography is... accommodating all squirmers.

Sunshine Baby

Whew! Just wrapped up two portrait collections, one mailed and one will be delivered tomorrow. Two more to finish by Saturday, two engagement sessions next week.

I still have editing to do from last weekend during my visit {to FLOR-IDA} to meet my nephew, Korban. To say things have been busy is an understatement.

First, my trip to Florida. I took a last minute, whirlwind of a trip back home to visit my gorgeous sistuh. So, actually, it wasn't "home, home", but I pretty much claim all of Florida as home. She lives in northwest Florida, very rural.

I made the tough decision to not bring my children for the sake of sanity and productivity. The primary reason for the trip was photographing this precious family and the newness of their little one.

I left the house at 3 am Friday morning and returned by 9:30 pm Monday night. Like I said, whirlwind.

My dad is my hero, he did all kinds of baby-sitting so Lee Ann could spend time with me. Mom joined us and we had so much fun shopping, gabbing, and eating American food.

They completely spoiled me. We had Olive Garden, authentic Mexican {emphasis on the authentic, Ontario friends}, moonlit walk on the beach, portraits at the marina, movie nights, and lots and lots of girl talk.

I love that Micah warmed up to me and was calling me, "Beby" the day I left. "Beby, cars, cars, Beby!", his eyes pleading me to join in his play.

Ivory and I had our annual "hunt", which consists of "hunting" for something while really doing a photo shoot. This time it was a "butterfly hunt", last time it was a "lion hunt". Regardless, we each think we're tricking the other into something and enjoy some fun aunt/niece time.

Korban, Korban, Korban. What do I say? This little guy is just perfection wrapped in cuteness. He is such a good baby and this aunt couldn't get enough of his darling little cuddles. Remember newborn smell? Remember how soft they feel?

I was thrilled to enjoy the bliss of a newborn...without all the work.

The picture {above} shows glimpses of my sister's workspace. She creates amazing beauty from this place. I'm so impressed with how she does it all. She now has 3 children 3 and under and makes it look easy.

I'm so glad to hold my babies in my arms again. Breathing them in and not taking them for granted. It's good for both parties to have a vacation from each other. {smile}

My Ben? I missed him so much. He is truly the love of my life and I will never get used to any kind of separation....an hour, a day...they all seem like a lifetime.

The complexity of it all is this...
How can I feel so at home yet so far from it? I miss it.

Advance Excuses

Work has been very busy due to weather rescheduling. I have 7 family shoots I'm editing with another 4 shoots this week. Love the work, but this means I have to prioritize my time as efficiently as possible.

Christmas Came A Little Early

My amazing sister, Sherri, did it again. She just sent us a box full of all kinds of goodies. The kids went crazy over it! It was full of all those things kids like best. We even have a broken pair of star glasses because they've been played with so much.

Now, Carter asks if every box is a present.

Creamy Pumpkin Icing
We had a very fun playdate yesterday and in preparation we made some autumn cookies. Seeing as I desperately need to go grocery shopping, my recipe options were limited. So, I kind of made up this frosting to make sugar cookies more "fall-ish".

Using this sugar cookie recipe, I waited for the cookies to cool and then spread this frosting:

Ingredients

1 cup confectioners' sugar
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons butter, softened
8 ounces cream cheese
1/4 cup can pumpkin
1 tsp cinnamon

To Make Frosting

Mix butter, cream cheese, and sugar until creamed together.
Add all other ingredients and mix together until smooth.

Autumn Splendor

I have to say, I'm not hatin' this warmth in October. Truly, it's been summer revisited. One day, it was warmer here than back home in Florida. Yesss!!!

This means lots of walks and time outside in "bummer shoes" (what Carter calls "summer shoes").

Yesterday I wanted to capture some of the red foliage, so we went on a little walk. Love my little explorers. So much fun seeing the discovery in their eyes.

My Big Boy

It happened. Just like that.

My son is pretty much potty trained. We think.

That's right. He decided over the weekend that he wanted to start going on the potty. Ben spent the weekend helping him acclimate and using a new beverage system (to minimize frequency). I'm in total shock. He's had one accident, but completely loves his big boy transition.

Speaking of big boy.

Carter is sprouting at a crazy rate. People always ask me if he's tall for his age, and for awhile he really wasn't. Now though he's just going through one of those growth spurts and is getting so tall!

It's not just the height though. It's the full sentences, the mannerisms. My baby is growing up.

Raise Your Hands - I Heart Faces

The challenge this week with I Heart Faces is "Raise Your Hands", all about hands.

This was such a fun photo shoot because it took us coastal.

The quaint little town of Port Rowan, nestled on the coast of Lake Erie. They have the best little ice cream parlor. So, after my niece and I enjoyed a round of chocolate shakes, we headed to the docks. We made it just as the sun was setting across the still waters.

Bugs and Thanksgiving

If Carter could express what he's grateful for this Thanksgiving...I'm pretty sure it would be bugs. It's his new-found passion. I'm sure as a mom I'm supposed to be a little grossed out by this. But, you want to know a secret?

Okay, so when I was a little girl, I may have been just a little nuts over bugs. My best friend, Maggie, and I would pull out all of the drowned bugs in our pool filter then dry and store them in empty egg cartons. I know, I heard it...I truly wasn't as creepy as this is starting to sound.

I remember my favorites were the Japanese and Rhino Beetles. My all time triumph was when Dad helped me capture a Goliath Beetle.

So, I have no complaining rights and should expect more bugs in my future. Frogs, however, are a different matter. Those freak me out.

We found that we have grapes growing on a grapevine in our backyard. How cool is that?

Off to enjoy more of my Thanksgiving. Let me tell you, the Eby's know how to do holidays. Happy Canadian Thanksgiving everyone!

P.S. I am thankful that I get to visit my family soon! More on that later, but I'm so grateful for this little surprise and can't wait to meet my new nephew.

Family Style

Sunday we attended the Eby reunion. You don't know the meaning of family until living in the Eby family for awhile.

My definition of extended family festivities included a few hours (maximum once a year) of talking and eating, then moving on to the next thing in life.

Ben's family is different.

I'm learning what it looks like for multi-generations and second and third cousins to know each other and play together. I'm seeing roots and traditions in a whole new light.

My children are cherished by many. Many who will always know and care for them. My children are blessed.

Pumpkin Patch

I love spontaneity. It's probably because I'm waaaaay to much of a planner in life. When happy surprises come my way, it's a breath of fresh air.

So, when Sharla asked if I'd like to go with her out to a Pumpkin Patch, I jumped that opportunity. The kids were definitely needing to get out of the house this morning.

I totally forgot my huge camera {hmmm, note to self: need to name it something a tad more flattering than that. }, so my Elph was put to work.

Anyways, we were off to Nauman's Farm. I wholeheartedly recommend it to the locals. Acres of land with pumpkins everywhere. I bought some fabulous autumn decor and homemade goodies like salsa and chilli starter.

Shout Out

A huge thank you to Terra for baby-sitting my children yesterday while I enjoyed an editing marathon at Starbucks.

Get this, she sent me a message over FB feeling prompted to be a ministry to my family in some way. She listed some possibilities in the message. I was completely overwhelmed by her kindness.

Living far from family makes working from home tricky at times. Her help was such a God-send.

Terra, thank you, thank you! My kids had such a blast with you and Carter kept talking about it the rest of the day.

Did I mention she brought homemade goodies as well? I know, I'm so spoiled.

This Just In

While at MaMa and PaPa's house on Friday, Carter discovered a toy microphone. He started talking into it, and then handed it over to me. I asked him if he was interviewing me, he said that he was.

We went on to discuss favorite colors, foods, playground activities, and whether cars or trucks were better (Carter is convinced trucks are best). Everyone was interviewed, MaMa, PaPa, Daddy, and even Larissa (he always answered on her behalf).

Guess what? I even have video footage! That's right, I finally got Movie Maker working again on my laptop. So, we even have documentary evidence here.

I need to experiment with my video settings on my Mark II, it's just something else to learn that I don't quite have time to squeeze into my schedule.

Vaca Recap

Vacation takes on a whole new meaning when you have two toddlers. Fun activities include kids meals at Perkins and double stroller cruising downtown Toronto. That's right, I'm officially "soccer mom", minus the mini van.

It was a bit of a roller coaster of fun, exhaustion, and even illness. We were just sick enough to trade off having a miserable day each. Ahhh, such is life for now.

Enough with the depressing part though...

Saturday

We took many long walks in the fresh Autumn air. Saturday night we went to a local conservation area. The leaves are beautiful right now!

Monday

We took a trip to Niagara Falls where we stayed at a hotel attached to a large, indoor, water-park. So fun! No pics because my Canon Elph decided not to read a new memory card.

Tuesday

The next day we crossed the border for a trip to Target. I bought a new sweater for our photo shoot because my other shirt makes me look like an ad for frumpy mummy. Our plans for Mexican food were thwarted by a certain whiny baby girl. She was miserable all day and we just headed home instead.

Wednesday
Another road trip took us downtown Toronto for Larissa's U.S. citizenship appointment. It's quite the ordeal, but totally worth it as it gives her dual citizenship 18 yrs. It includes tons of paperwork, original documents, transcripts, and no electronics (including phones) inside the embassy.

Once we were finished we were able to get our double stroller (that's right, no double-strollers allowed in the embassy either) and cruise downtown TO. I can only imagine what a sight we were walking among the businessmen and women. We stuck out...just a little. All that to eat at Chipotle!

Thursday-Friday
We traveled to Ben's parents home on Thursday with bags in tow. We stayed overnight so Ben and I could have a date night on Thursday.

Ben and I went out for appetizers and just laughed at the crayons on the table...we were grateful to not be needing those! Then, we watched The Help (ahhh, deserves a post of it's own, amazing movie!). We rounded out the evening with coffee and dessert. Lots of laughing and talking, like really meaningful talking.

I adore dating Ben, he's absolutely every dream of mine made reality.

Friday Mom and Dad Eby attended a wedding. We just had to capture them looking so spiffy.

Can you tell they were snacking?

Carter adores this toy parrot. Since it repeats everything you say, he had quite the conversation going. Telling him that I was going to take pictures of him.

Our evenings were so relaxing, watching season premiers. My favorite these days is The Mentalist. Just as Michael Weston from Burn Notice is Ben's hero (psshhh, and he says he's a pacifist), mine is Patrick Jane on the Mentalist.

It felt very weird not updating along the way, but it was so good focusing on my fam and just enjoying some time off.

The Un-Happy Hour

Today was one of those days. You know, where the rain lulls you into a sleepy stupor. It whispers, "Go to bed." Resisting such temptations is a little easier when two little monkeys are climbing all over you.

When Carter woke up from his nap today he looked out the window, hung his head, and said, "Oh no! Rain again." Yes, it's Autumn, and the rain is ushering in that cooler weather. Much to our dismay.

First, I tried encouraging him with the song, "Rain, rain, go away." That didn't work. He kept saying in frustration, "Oh no, still rain!" We take things very literally these days.

In consolation, we played on our front entry way for awhile, just to get some fresh air.

In other news, I've been exploring the world of Crock Pot Girls in search of sanity. Whatever the opposite of "Happy Hour" is, that's what's going on at our house between 5-6 pm. My little ones turn into whiny fussy-pants who just need - no - demand 100% of their mother's attention. Ahhh!

So far, it's been going well. I've never been a huge fan of crock pots, more of a necessary evil. However, I'm learning to be more creative with it. While it may not be any Rachel Ray material, it certainly buys me some sanity.

Sanity = A five star dining experience in my house.

I just made their Bacon Ranch Chicken dinner tonight and it was probably my fave (of course, most fattening too). I had no energy for pictures of that though...tiring day, for sure.

Here was last night's cuisine...

Teriyaki Chicken

Ingredients

1 small bag of baby carrots
1 can chunked pineapple (we used 20 oz can)
1/2 large red onion cut in chunks
2 cloves garlic
4 chicken breasts or 6 thighs
1/2 cup teriyaki sauce
Salt and Pepper to taste

Layer vegetables/fruit/garlic first, then add the chicken on top. Drizzle teriyaki sauce over the chicken and add salt and pepper to taste. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours. We will be serving ours over white rice.

Excavation Evidence

Nothing like a bummer of a sickness week to make you so grateful for normality. The kids are back to themselves, mostly cheerful (as long as Mommy doesn't spend too much time working).

During one such work moment, I turned around to find an excavation dig going on in my living room. Both guilty parties dropped shovels in their panic. Images reveal the evidence of misconduct.

So, being the brilliant person that I am, I over-bought Cheerios. Thus, the Cheerio bar inspiration. I doubled this recipe, but the honey was way over-done, FYI.

Oaty Cereal Bars

"Nutritious breakfast cereal smothered in a peanut butter and honey mixture to make a tasty portable breakfast."

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 cup white sugar

1/2 cup honey

1/2 cup peanut butter

3 cups toasted oat cereal

1 cup salted peanuts (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Grease a 9x13 inch pan. In a large saucepan over medium heat, stir together the sugar and honey. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat and stir in the peanut butter until well blended. Stir in the cereal and if desired, stir in the salted peanuts. Press into the prepared pan. Allow to cool until firm, then cut into bars.

Apple Pumpkin Muffins

I know, I know. I've gone all pumpkin on you. I am loving this fall weather, it has me out to get my "baked goods on". Plus, with Ben watching the kids this morning, I used it to take a much needed break.

P.S. I substituted the whopping 2 cups of sugar for 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 1/2 cup of white. Oh! I also always like my muffins extra large, so even though it says it makes 18, I made a dozen.

Apple Pumpkin Muffins

"If you like pumpkin, you'll love these moist muffins. With an appealing streusel topping and tender apple bits throughout, they make a great accompaniment to a meal or a handy breakfast on the run."

INGREDIENTS:

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

2 cups sugar

1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 eggs

1 cup canned or cooked pumpkin

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 cups finely chopped peeled apples

STREUSEL:

1/4 cup sugar

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

4 teaspoons cold butter or margarine

DIRECTIONS:

1.	In a bowl, combine the first five ingredients. In another bowl, combine the eggs, pumpkin and oil; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Fold in apples. Fill paper-lined muffin cups two-thirds full. In a small bowl, combine sugar, flour and cinnamon. Cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over batter.
2.	Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks.

Pumpkin Roll Cake

I know, I know, right after posting about whole wheat bread, I have to counter with this fattening delight. Cream Cheese + Pumpkin = oooo la la.

My "roll" is definitely a little sad, but it made up in taste for what was lacking in presentation.

Pumpkin Roll II

"This is the best pumpkin roll I've ever tasted. Everyone who tastes it always ask for the recipe. Note: One 29 ounce can of pumpkin will make 5 pumpkin rolls. Dust with additional confectioners' sugar, if desired."

INGREDIENTS:

3 eggs

1 cup white sugar

2/3 cup canned pumpkin

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

confectioners' sugar for dusting

1 cup confectioners' sugar

3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons butter, softened

8 ounces cream cheese

DIRECTIONS:

1.	Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 15x10x1 inch baking pan and line with parchment paper. Grease and flour the paper.
2.	In a large bowl, beat eggs on high for five minutes. Gradually add white sugar and pumpkin. Add flour, cinnamon, and baking soda. Spread batter evenly in pan. Sprinkle walnuts evenly on top.
3.	Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 15 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Immediately turn out onto a linen towel dusted with confectioners sugar. Peel off paper and roll cake up in the towel, starting with the short end. Cool.
4.	To Make Filling: Mix confectioners sugar, vanilla, butter or margarine, and cream cheese together till smooth.
5.	Carefully unroll the cake. Spread filling over cake to within 1 inch of edges. Roll up again. Cover and chill until serving. Dust with additional confectioners' sugar, if desired.

Home and Whole Wheat Diva-ish

This is our fist weekend that we haven't had anything scheduled in ages. Seriously, the last weekend like this was April 23rd. I know because I checked. {Oh yes, you can say it, I'm a total dork. I also Google things that I act like I understand I know.} Is that bad or what?

I spent the morning baking away while Ben spent time with the kids. I really needed a break from the little ones. My sanity was in the high risk margin.

While taking some pics to document some new recipes, Carter came out and joined me. I was snapping pictures of the pumpkin cake (recipe and image to come) when he plopped down and said, "Okaaaay, time for yummy cake!" Unfortunately, for him, it was not time for "yummy cake" since he's still not feeling well.

I decided to take a few pictures of him goofing off in between shooting other things. Carter is very...dramatic...when it comes to his feelings. I'm sure it has something to do with being 2 years old, but wow, tantrums galore this week.

Whole Wheat Bread

Before you think I'm going all crunchy granola on you, just know how much I do not like whole wheat bread. My mom convinced me that a wheat grinder would allow me to combine taste with nutrition. Her persuasive powers must have worked because today I actually ground my own wheat and baked bread. With honey.

I know, I'm goin' all domestic here...just nevermind that it was done with sweatpants and a t-shirt. June Cleaver has left the building.

As I was surprised with how very easy it is to grind wheat, I am oh so likely to do it again. This recipe was great, just a little heavy on the honey. The taste is *way* better than store-bought whole wheat, and far more nutritious too. So I'm told.

Simple Whole Wheat Bread

"This honey wheat bread is proof that wonderful flavor, texture and aroma can be had if you just follow a straightforward game plan."

INGREDIENTS:

3 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45

degrees C)

2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast

1/3 cup honey

5 cups bread flour

3 tablespoons butter, melted

1/3 cup honey

1 tablespoon salt

3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

2 tablespoons butter, melted

DIRECTIONS:

1.	In a large bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and 1/3 cup honey. Add 5 cups white bread flour, and stir to combine. Let set for 30 minutes, or until big and bubbly.
2.	Mix in 3 tablespoons melted butter, 1/3 cup honey, and salt. Stir in 2 cups whole wheat flour. Flour a flat surface and knead with whole wheat flour until not real sticky - just pulling away from the counter, but still sticky to touch. This may take an additional 2 to 4 cups of whole wheat flour. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to coat the surface of the dough. Cover with a dishtowel. Let rise in a warm place until doubled.
3.	Punch down, and divide into 3 loaves. Place in greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pans, and allow to rise until dough has topped the pans by one inch.
4.	Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 25 to 30 minutes; do not overbake. Lightly brush the tops of loaves with 2 tablespoons melted butter or margarine when done to prevent crust from getting hard. Cool completely

Momentary Reprieve

Ahhh...blogging relaxes me. Carter finally went down for a nap (poor guy is just so miserable), so that gives me "blog time".

Branding Identity
It's been quite the journey discovering my professional style. There was never a doubt that I was pursuing portrait photography (vs. landscape, wildlife, etc.), but there are so many styles within a genre. I also knew - beyond a shadow of a doubt - that I would be a lifestyle photographer, focusing on natural relationships at play.

Even within lifestyle photography there are moods and editing tones. Within the first few months I was drawn to the vintage look and feel. It took me awhile to discover that you can still have that nostalgic feeling while maintaining a fresh look. I now try achieving that look in-camera more than through editing. Although, I do find editing very helpful.

On Friday I attended a virtual photography workshop (shout out to CreativeLive) where I was really challenged to hone my branding image. I couldn't get it off my mind. So, I've been giving my blog a mini-makeover. I still like my logo, I didn't want to lose that in the shuffle. You can check out the "face-lift" here. I also embedded some slideshows (instead of links to them) and spiffed up some formatting.

I really love design and if I were a teenager again deciding what to study, I would totally major in design. I think it could only enhance photography skills. Sadly, I know very little of it with no time to learn. Maybe someday.

On a final note, the ever-addicting site, Pinterest, has me dreaming. I don't see any need for a studio space, but if I did have one, it would have to be something like this...

All the Whinies

So, we still have sick little ones in the Eby home. The kids have pretty much felt like this...

...just not their normal, selves. While we always have whining, it's been in excess with lots of melt downs. In fact, I'm writing this at 2:30 am watching Veggie Tales with Carter since he's too miserable to sleep. Bummer.

Yesterday, during a recent respite (between meltdowns), the kids enjoyed playing in my new laundry basket.

In other news, Larissa got her first haircut. The little "scraggles" at her ends were getting a little too much for me, so the scissors came out. I'm hoping this will thicken it up a bit (especially the front). She's so adorable with the cut, she totally pulls it off.

Reality Check

Finding, capturing, and blogging those highlights shifts my perspective.

As a mom, I don't have a to-do list that's checked off, performance logs...in fact, most of my jobs have to be in "repeat mode" all day long. Change diapers, feed children, clean children, clean everything around children, kiss children, instruct children, encourage children, correct children x 1,000. That's my day. Mostly.

When I chronicle the fun outings, activities, and interactions, it reminds me of why I choose this as my full-time job.

One such example...

After a horribly messy breakfast with tears and food-throwing - galore - both Carter and Larissa entertained themselves nicely with "shopping". We got out the play food that my sister, Sherri, gave them and they each used a basket to walk around and swap food items. Carter refused to join in the picture fun.

See, they can be adorable. They can be t.r.o.u.b.l.e. Whatever the moment may be, there's a mommy kind of love that knows no boundaries.

Weekend Wrap-Up

What a weekend! On Saturday I was the second shooter for this, incredible, local photographer. I learned so much! She does so many things well, but her posing rocked my world.

I have to say, I felt very guilty leaving the fam Saturday morning when Carter started showing evidence of a stomach virus (i.e. throwing up, fever). But, the thing about this job is that I can't just take a "sick day", especially for a wedding. Thankfully, I always leave the kids with Ben when I'm shooting a wedding, so I knew they were in the best of hands.

So, the kids were sick all weekend (that's right, made that plural, dudes). Fevers and some kind of stomach virus - thankfully vomit was kept to a minimum. It was disappointing since Carter was supposed to start pre-school Sunday School on Sunday. They seem to both be doing better now, Larissa dragging a little further behind.

There's not much you can do when the kids are sick, but an evening walk in the sunshine was just what the doctor ordered. I enjoyed playing with the 85 mm lens before shipping it off today. Definitely on the wish list.

On a more somber note, yesterday was the anniversary of September 11th. It made me homesick for those I love and who I gathered with during the tragedies of that day.

I was working from home, at the time, and just kept the radio on while at my computer, sitting in disbelief. I remember wondering how drastically our world would change, what this would mean. No longer would I take my freedom for granted.

Days later, I was flying to Chicago to travel the southeastern U.S. to staff regional conferences. I remember not being scared of flying, just very grateful for the extra security. On my return flight home (this was November), I met a young woman who was so fatigued from all of the extra questioning she was getting. She had a dark complexion with dark hair and eyes, but I don't think she was even middle eastern. I remember feeling badly for the profiling that would take place as a result. The decisions of one group affecting the masses in so many devastating ways.

Anyways, enough with the reminiscing. Back to my Monday chores.

Family Portraits 2011

We just booked our family portraits with a local photographer. I'm so excited! We're actually doing an exchange for each other, which is going to be so much fun.

I've been mulling over wardrobe ideas, and when another photographer friend shared this idea on Pinterest, I completely became inspired. I decided on hues of camel and blue.

Since Old Navy is having a rock-star sale right now, we pretty much bought everything there. Ben already had his outfit, so he doesn't get a new outfit (sorry, Babe). These are clothes we'll get plenty of more use over the fall season.

Plus, since they have awesome online shopping (and free shipping for orders over a certain price), I didn't even have to drag the kids through my in-store deliberations.

The Art of Sibling Friendship

I can still hear my mother's voice telling me ,"Long after your friends come and go, you will always have your sister. Learn to be best friends." I can also remember my eyes rolling and shrugging it off as another parental lecture.

Years later, I'm so grateful for the gift of friendship that I have in my sister. Second only to Ben, she's been there, believed in me, and has loved me more than I ever deserved.

I wish that gift to my children. The gift of sibling friendship.

We call Carter and Larissa our "planned twins" (not to discount those who raise twins - I'm sure it's more challenging). The first year could get very rough...very, very rough. I can't believe that I had a newborn with a child Larissa's age...that seems crazy now.

Each week gets better and better with their little friendship. This week was a huge leap forward. They play games together, run around the house, and Carter even looks after her, "This way Hussah. Get up, Hussah. No Ma'am, Hussa." Larissa, in turn, calls Carter, "Carty" and always has to be near him.

I am loving this.

Here's to many years of beautiful brother/sister friendship!

Pre Preschool

I'm currently renting a very awesome Canon 85mm 1.2 lens that arrived this morning. So, yeah. It's pretty much like Christmas around here. Too bad I have to return it on Monday.

I've enjoyed some experimenting with it this morning. Not really testing it's limits as of yet, will work on that this weekend.

In other news, I bought Carter his very first workbook. He is seriously going crazy with learning these days. His newest favorite activity? Sounding out words. That's right, you heard me. Of course, he only knows his short letter sounds, but he certainly tries reading by dragging his finger across the word, sounding out each letter.

This morning we worked on shapes, matching, counting, and colors (which he struggles with). He was very distressed when he had to stop for naptime. So, I guess here we go with pre-preschool.

Love my little smarty-pants.

Just bought my autumn candles this morning. Now, it's officially fall!

Peach Strawberry Muffins

So, I had a last minute meeting with a fabulous local photographer this morning. Ahh, it was SO refreshing talking with another professional in the biz. She hired me as her second shooter for an upcoming wedding. I can't wait, I know we're going to have all kinds of fun working together.

My wonderful friend (and cousin-in-law), Sharla was wonderfully accommodating with the last-minute baby-sitting request. Of course, I had to bring some token of appreciation.

We're on a "fast food fast" right now, so there's no grabbing a coffee on the way. This is so good for me, it forces me to actually get back to some home-baked goodies. I was all ready to make my go-to scone recipe, but I totally forgot to buy the sour cream needed. This forced me to find a new recipe - another good thing.

Oh, and I bought some Starbucks grounds yesterday to help with the transition. Not that I buy Starbucks often, but those $1 McDonalds iced coffees were pretty fab.

With no blueberries, I changed the recipe to "To Die for Peach Strawberry Muffins"...and, um...let's just say I can't make this recipe too often because - yikes! It is truly to die for.

To Die For Blueberry Muffins

"Big blueberry flavor warrants big muffins, so fill the cups right up for oversized muffins that will please everyone. The cinnamon-sugar streusel is the crowning glory."

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 cup white sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 egg

1/3 cup milk

1 cup fresh blueberries

1/2 cup white sugar

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup butter, cubed

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

DIRECTIONS:

1.	Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease muffin cups or line with muffin liners.
2.	Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 3/4 cup sugar, salt and baking powder. Place vegetable oil into a 1 cup measuring cup; add the egg and enough milk to fill the cup. Mix this with flour mixture. Fold in blueberries. Fill muffin cups right to the top, and sprinkle with crumb topping mixture.
3.	To Make Crumb Topping: Mix together 1/2 cup sugar, 1/3 cup flour, 1/4 cup butter, and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon. Mix with fork, and sprinkle over muffins before baking.
4.	Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until done.

I'm not one who lives well on a set schedule. However, some atmosphere elements enhance my productivity. The combination of a good cup of coffee with Fernando Ortega serenading provides such a peaceful feeling. Ahhh, back to editing for me...

Here's To Fresh Starts

There's just something about September that offers hope for the summer sloth. As much as I hate seeing summer go, I know I need September to give me a good 'ole kick in the bum (one of my new Canadian vocabulary words).

September is more like starting a new year to me than January. It's totally reminiscent of my school days. Opening the fresh textbook, knowing I only need to move forward, no catching up.

One of the first things to go is the junk food. Too many $1 soft drinks at the local fast food chain, too many freezies....time to whip this family back in shape (speaking to myself, primarily).

Our pit stop on the way north...

This morning I bought a bunch of produce, fruits and vegetables, which we're loving...just tell me why healthy food has to be so expensive? The kids loved their grapes and watermelon as part of lunch today. I enjoyed some homemade popcorn and a smoothie.

Forget the food...just look at my house...no wait, please don't! The Eby home is officially a disaster area. So, I am off to give myself a good kick my September motivation in high gear. Happy back to everything!

Monetville Mini Vaca

We loved our little getaway to the north over this long weekend. Ben took Friday off so we could avoid traffic - which was wonderful.

We headed north to the place of Ben's homeland. It's a beautiful land of rocks, trees, and water. The kids loved it! Ben's childhood friend, Roger, and his lovely family, hosted us. They have two children the same age as our children, which worked out so well. Lots of pay time together, for sure.

Marina, Roger's wife, fed us incredible spreads of delicious food. I think we don't have to eat for a week now! We so enjoyed our visit.

Ben spent most of the day fishing on Saturday and then we joined them on the boat later that evening. These pictures capture some of our time that evening...complete with campfire.

Adventures in Baking

Today, Larissa joined in the baking fun. She didn't quite grasp how to be helpful and focused more on consuming than preparation. She kept dipping her beater back into the pan of brownie batter before I could catch her. When I would turn to stop and lecture her, those big blue eyes twinkled as she smiled saying, "Mooooe, mooooe" (interpretation: more).

Carter tries keeping Larissa in line as well these days. I catch him waving his index finger while saying, "No ma'am. No ma'am." when she's getting into mischief.

Sooo, we may have gotten a little too messy and a mini-bath session was in order.

All Things Photography

It's been almost a year since starting my photography business. I can hardly believe all that's happened since last September when making this monumental decision.

I look back at my first work and I cringe. I laugh when thinking of the growth. I couldn't be happier with the journey so far. I've found my perfect vocation match and am still so twitterpated.

There are so many people and resources that I've used in my self-taught endeavor. I want to make sure I give due credit for all of the learning that took place this year.

John and Kerry have offered never-ending support, hands-on learning opportunities (e.g. second shooting), and friendship. Having a local photography team to brainstorm with is a huge value to my learning.

Our Little Update

First, so grateful that Larissa is feeling better. Thursday was a loooong day keeping her house-bound and by then Carter was getting needy for attention. Today was much better, she's just a little sensitive and clingy.

In other news, we enjoyed our first little devotion time with Carter tonight. I went all gushy-mom loving this reading time with Daddy. The story is about creation and then Adam and Eve. After the stories there is an example prayer such as, "Thank you God for making the animals. Amen." So, we were teaching Carter to pray. After getting to the part about the serpent, Carter interrupts saying, "Bad snake. Amen."

As promised, pics of the vintage toy I bought. C'mon, tell me you didn't play with something like this as a child?

Forgive me while I brag a little on Carter. He's growing up so quickly. He's become quite the little helper. He insists on cooking with me for every meal. He also follows multiple-step instructions and loves to feel important.

He's also mastering his letter sounds (he knows 20 proficiently) thanks to Leepfrog's Letter Factory. I'm shocked by how quickly he picks up on language skills. He also loves counting....but, we all know he's a mini-Ben, so no shocker there.

Off to enjoy an evening with my man. Happy weekend!

A Workation

It's weeks like these that I'm so happy to be at home with the kids during the weekdays. Ben had to go out of town for some all day business meetings. Of course, we thought 3 days would be just way too long to be without him...so, we decided to join him! Well, join him for the fun parts, anyways.

Larissa had a respiratory infection over the weekend, and even though she seemed to be doing better, I wanted to have the doctor take a look before going out of town. The infection was improving, her breathing, however was still a concern. [Not sure if you remember the "rattle" in her breathing last April, taking us to the hospital.] So, she's back on a puffer to clear up the breathing.

I had the car all packed and ready to go so we could head out after the doctor's visit. With my Starbucks Chai Latte in hand, we were ready to go!

Ben and I still had to work in the evenings after the kids' bedtime, but at least we were in the same room together. So worth it, not saying goodbye when we say goodnight.

Sherri, this is for you, we take Stella and Pancakes (the latter is Carter's affectionate name for his monkey) everywhere. They fight over them all the time, I keep teaching them they each have one.

While Ben was in meetings all day Tuesday, the kids explored Chatham with me. There's a cute little park with a very exciting fountain (Carter loves fountains). So, we spent the morning, playing at the park, walking beside the river, and even popped in a local thrift store where I found an awesome vintage toy and books...will show later.

Did I mention the great pool? That's right, we even get swimming time! Carter is pretty impressed with "Daddy's house"...vocabulary word of the week: hotel.

So, I wrote the above while still away. Larissa's respiratory infection transitioned into a stomach virus (so it would seem). She's not keeping anything down and has been completely lethargic since late afternoon yesterday. Glad to be home so I can get my baby back to her healthy self.

Splash!

Wow, where in the world did summer go? No matter how much I prepare myself, I'm never ready for September's arrival. Yikes!

Well, we're making the most of our last bits of August...even the day where we had to wear pants and long sleeves.

Last week I was on the hunt for a pair of black heels to wear to a wedding...let's face it, I haven't put on a pair of stilettos since the babes entered my world. Anyway, Carter saw the "sun fountain" and asked to throw in penny. After both children tossing their pennies (that's right, heaven forbid Carter do anything that Larissa can't do as well), they couldn't stop splashing and playing with the fountain water. So, that meant a spontaneous trip to the splash pad!

Excitement would be the understatement of the year. They were completely devastated when we had to leave. I promised we would return again soon.

Buried in Photoshop

I am so MIA these days.

Every spare moment is completely immersed in Photoshop. I'm so grateful, business has been so busy in the best kind of way. So, I sit here, with Etta James crooning, "At Last", sipping my iced coffee, and typing in between edits.

I had a fabulous day yesterday, complete with flowers from two young gentlemen. First, Carter - all on his own - picked me a dandelion and gave it to me, "Here Mommy!" I was so blown away, how can a mom not be in love with that guy? Then, at a family portrait session, the seven year old boy picked two purple flowers for me at the end of the session. Okay, so maybe they were from his grandmother's flower bed and really shouldn't have been picked...but, I still felt flattered. More flattered than I did when the 16 year old kid asked for my phone number at a recent wedding I shot.

Oh, and I'm completely crushing on this Ferrari from last night's shoot. What a hottie!

Just in case you fear poor Ben is far from my mind...rest assured, he's still the one holding my heart. We actually get to attend a wedding together soon where it'll be kind of like a full date day. I can't wait!

In other news, I attended a meeting this morning preparing for Mom's group in the fall, hard to believe that's starting up again so soon. Summertime is WAY too short up here. I'm never ready for autumn's arrival. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against the season itself, it's all in what it represents. That's right, winter's inevitability.

So, I haven't been taking pictures of the kids lately, but here are a few products that I've worked on for clients...

A Country Vacation

We are officially back from our whirlwind trip to Indiana. We have some very close friends there who were adopted into our family ages ago. Carter and Larissa completely adopted them as well and felt at home immediately.

Going to Indiana for the kids is kind of like...well...like a resort for kids. There's swimming, animals, new toys, and open spaces to run as much as they like. Needless to say, my kids were in heaven. The morning of the day we left I told Carter we were going back to "Carter's house" and he burst into tears. He cheered up when he realized he could see his daddy.

Ben couldn't come due to the extreme work load he's facing right now. That was one of the inspirations for the trip, it allowed Ben to work some late hours to get caught up on some projects. Thankfully we had Skype for our evening video chats!

I was intentional about not using my camera. I chose two specific play times, on one day so that I could truly enjoy the moments. Plus, I was looking after two toddlers...not much time for photography.

I did manage to sneak in a session for Lynne (our hostess) and her beautiful family. You can see those pictures here.

These two started it all with their friendship when I was only a preschooler. Maggie, the oldest of five girls (only 2 at the time), quickly became my bff. We got into all kinds of trouble together. You can hear some of our crazy adventures in the August 2010 archives.

This family makes simplicity into an art form. I adore the hand crafted and history-packed elements.

So, my mom drove down with me, which was super fun. We stopped and ate at a Mexican restaurant, oh so delish. I also did a bit of shopping for things that I can't get in Canada.

I drove home solo, however, and survived to tell the tale. No, the kids were actually really great, even though they only slept about 2.5 hours of the 7. Guess driving through the night isn't necessarily the easier option. Like I said though, they were little angels, with the help of Sesame Street's Jamboree DVD (playing over, and over, and over, and over again).

Grateful to be home, but missing my family so much.

Adventures in Far Off Places

Loving our time with the "Rosserbury" families. Lots of time in little and big swimming pools, running around outside, running around inside...pretty much lots of running. I told Ben, it's like a resort for kids. They are loving life in wide open spaces with new toys and friends to enjoy it all with.

Carter is going through this phase where a guy is "Dad" and woman, "Mom" (in other words, "a dad" and "a mom"). So, when he runs up to the guys around here calling them, "Daddy"...I have to explain his meaning.

I haven't been taking many pictures though because I really want to focus on enjoying the time here. Plus, I'm running after two small children, and well...honestly, I don't have the time for editing these days.
