Today, Ben's office held a baby shower for Larissa, so we had a little field trip to the office.  Carter loved running (yes, he went from crawling to a cowboy-style run) up and down the halls and into offices.  Rissa got all the love from the ladies in the office.  We received wonderful gifts, but most of all, it was just great having their support...

They were incredibly thoughtful and even bought Carter some toys!

So, my amazing husband not only has all the good looks, but can also whip up some mean strawberry jam.  I'm using all my self-control to not devour it all.  You can find his recipe on this website.  I made the bread - we make a good team!

I've been informed that Carter has changed so much over the past few months, so these videos are for my family so they can see his emerging personality.

Off the Bookshelf

I'm loving this time for reading lately.  I have a new favorite author, Khaled Hosseini, he's completely captivated my interest in the Afghanistan culture through his books The Kite Runner and now A Thousand Splendid Suns.  I haven't finished the latter just yet, but don't have much further to go.  It's made me extremely grateful for the life I live with my home, food, and relationships with loved ones.  We're truly very spoiled North Americans.  So, the plus side to a baby girl waking up with gas at 4 am is more time for reading!

Summer on the Court & First Day "On the Job"

One of our neighbors initiated a Summer BBQ for our little neighborhood.  We had a great time hanging out with the neighbors...

Ben was the grill-master...

Larissa wasn't too thrilled with the outdoors...trying our best to keep her cool and out of the sun.

Carter's first time using a fork - he was very excited about this.  He loved practicing his walking and befriending everyone.

I'm so glad we had the opportunity to spend an afternoon with these great people!

First Day "On the Job"

Today was the first day I parented my two children "solo".  As I expected, there were tears all around, but thankfully, most of the day went smoothly.  I tried to maintain our routines, for Carter's sake.  Larissa probably had the biggest adjustment today, her first day not being held whenever she cried.  The sling is great, but a mom's gotta shower.

Carter did remarkably well today, there were moments of trouble and towards the end of the day we had some melt-downs, but I was proud of him, overall.

Carter continues enjoying the toys Grandma and Grandpa Canterbury bought him...especially the very noisy fire engine.

Carter's favorite toy - by far - is his cell phone.  It's an old cell phone of Ben's, but it still works.  Carter jabbers on it all the time, we really think he speaks another language.

Carter gives us the phone so we can talk for a moment, but then he expects us to give it back to him.  The conversation goes something like this:
Ben: Hello, yes this is Carter's Daddy.  Yes, he's here.  You can talk to him.  All right, bye then.
Carter: Hi. --jabber in his foreign language--

Baby Staycation

Ben is taking vacation this week to spend some time with the baby (he only took 1 day off when the baby was born) and his family...as well as recuperate from his intense study schedule.  We're eating up every moment of hubby/daddy time.

My parents left us on Wednesday morning.  It's SO hard saying goodbye to them...you'd think it'd get easier, but I think it just gets harder each time.  But, as my former college ("university" for you Canadians) director used to say, "We'll have a good cry and get over it."  I so appreciate their help for 2 wonderful weeks.  My midwife couldn't believe that I haven't had to "solo" parent the two kids yet with all the help I'm getting.  I know, I'm very spoiled.

Our little family hasn't really done that much, other than relax - lots of napping, reading, walking, swimming, and watching TV episodes in the evenings.  Oh yes, did I mention surviving an earthquake?  That's right, apparently I experienced my very first earthquake, I just totally missed it.  I'm sure you can tell how devastating it was by my oblivion.  Here's an article describing more.  Carter is doing so much better, he's back to entertaining himself and even giving Larissa kisses.  Here's to hoping he's fully adjusted to the change by Monday...when I really do fly solo.

A summertime favorite for Carter and me:

Today I went for Larissa's 2-week check-up and she's doing great.  She now weighs 7lbs. 15oz., which is fantastic!  She's really long, outgrowing her newborn sleepers.  She continues being a very content baby and eating so much that she's really helping me lose the baby weight.  I still have a ways to go to where I want to be, but so far 20 lbs. down...thank *you*, Larissa!

Larissa's favorite activity (well, second to eating):

I'm slowly getting back into cooking - as I said, I've been spoiled - and today I made one of our favorite desserts for our midwife team.

Of course, some more pictures of my Carter Bear, I love him SO much!
